Questions before you install
What is the difference between web Slate and desktop Slate?
Slate Web runs in the browser for workspace admin, billing, and day-to-day work. Slate for Mac and Windows keep `.slate` records on your machine, then replay supported Board card and Chat message edits through Slate APIs.
Do I need a workspace before I install?
Yes. Create or join a workspace in the browser, then sign in from the desktop app to connect the install to your account.
Where are local files stored?
Slate desktop writes workspace records to `.slate` on your Mac or Windows device. Open the folder from the desktop app after sign-in to inspect Markdown records, manifests, work-item READMEs, and validation errors.
Who can read desktop files?
The signed-in OS user can read the local files. Keep private workspace data off shared device accounts, and manage cloud automation access from Settings when needed.
How do Mac updates work?
Slate for Mac checks the Sparkle appcast for signed updates after install. Release metadata links list the current DMG, appcast, and API JSON.
How do Windows updates work?
Slate for Windows uses App Installer metadata and signed MSIX bundles. Install through Slate.appinstaller or download the MSIX bundle directly.
Start in the browser. Add desktop when you need local files.
Create a workspace on the web, then install Slate for Mac or Windows to keep readable records on disk before sync.
